Our Desire
We earnestly desire for all to hear Jesus say” 28″Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30.

Name Above All Names
How majestic is your name in all the earth?
Some men were born to a great name as a czar or a king; others made their name great by achievements or have a great name conferred upon them. Jesus is great because he inherited a great name. His name is great because of achievements; He is great because a great name was conferred upon Him. All that Jesus was, His name is. All that Jesus was, that name will be during all ages. That name has lost none of it power of the man who bore it. It endures forever, time without end.
Quote from E.W. Kenyon book the wonderful name of Jesus.
Introduction
All things have a name. A name identifies the object referred to. By calling the object by its name we immediately recognize its appearance and characteristics. Without a name we have but a vague opinion of what is being referred to. One of the first things an expectant couple considers is a name for the child. Once the child has been named the mention of its name causes a flood of emotions and memories. Should we wonder where this and how this pattern began? Let us look at the history of how naming a person, animal or object came into being. Gen 2:7 the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being soul. Notice God immediately named the man and ceased to call him “man” but now called him by the name Adam. Gen 5:2 (Amp Bible) He created them male and female and blessed them and named them [both] Adam [Man] at the time they were created.
Many Bible readers treat its genealogical lists as an annoying portion of the Bible, at first glance, there seems to be no point or profit in the enumeration of names of men who died thousands of years ago.
Yet because the Bible is the inspired Word of God, even these directories of names were written for our learning. If properly studied they yield remarkable results. Many of these names describe the founding nations, as well as the personality and character of the man., and have a priceless historical value. Reading them, we find they often show the course taken by men in their settlements over the earth. of names give us a priceless historical look into the lives of men which. Ancient Hebrew names, which at first sight might appear unattractive, and are passed over as unworthy of serious, thought, have something about them which compels our prayerful consideration. In many cases Bible names are fragments of ancient history, revelations of divine purposes, and expressions of hopes and prophecies of the future.
Truth taught by names is another important aspect to observe. The significance of names opens up a field of pleasant and profitable investigation to all true lovers of Scripture. While many of the names may not have been designed to be typical, they are certainly suggestive of spiritual truth, as can be seen in the names Jacob gave his sons. In ancient Israel the name of a person was supposed to indicate some characteristic of that person, or be linked to circumstances, however trivial or monotonous, connected with his birth. Names and nature, as well as names and facts, were made to correspond, as can be found in the name Moses gave his son (Exod. 2:22), and the naming of Ichabod (1 Sam. 4:21). As we review the suggested meanings given to the names alphabetically set forth in the following chapter, we will find that they cover many associations.
Names denote natural or personal qualities. A classic illustration of this is Abigail’s plea to David for her worthless husband: “…as his name is, so is he: Nabal is his name and folly is with him” (1 Sam. 25:25). Nabal means “fool.” In effect then, Abigail said, “Pay no attention to my husband. He’s a fool by name, and a fool by nature.”
Gen 5:2 Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.
The name is derived from the red soil from which God created God
could have left him un-named and simply called “man” but chose to
recognize him as a specific individual. An example of the preciousness of having a name is found in Ex 33:17b. where God is speaking to Moses ” I am pleased with you and I know you by name.” and yet another illustration Isa 43:1 But now, this is what the Lord says — he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
“A person’s name is to him or her the sweetest and most important sound in any language.” –
A person’s name is the greatest connection to their own identity and individuality. Some might say it is the most important word in the world to that person. It is the one way we can easily get someone’s attention. It is a sign of courtesy and a way of recognizing them. When someone remembers our name after meeting us, we feel respected and more important. It makes a positive and lasting impression on us. (quote by Dale Carnegie)
The first man on Earth now had a name provided by his creator. The name Adam represented the one which God said “Gen 1:26-28 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”
Adam. The king of all which live upon the Earth. Adam. The son of God. Adam. the one which would preside over all the Earth possessing the nature, personality and character of God Himself. God had instilled His characteristics in Adam for he wanted all creation to witness the true description of himself that they may experience the awe of living in a world ruled by the principles of a loving God. God expressed his confidence and satisfaction in Adam by asking him to do an astonishing feat of naming all animal life. I am sure God could have easily named the animals as he created them but chose to give the task to a very special person. Notice God brought the unnamed animals to Adam telling him to each a name. Gen 2:19 And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.
How many creatures did God ask Adam to name is a question we cannot answer. However, an 8/4/2011 estimate suggest there are presently 8.7 million creatures presently living on earth. Why would I draw attention to animals, fish and fowls? To draw our attention to the fact God wanted them to have a name. As we read through the Bible, we see the results of Adams accomplishment by reading many names of animals mentioned Job 42:12 The Lord blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the first. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys. Gen 47:17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses, their sheep and goats, their cattle and donkeys. And he brought them through that year with food in exchange for all their livestock.
After Adam finished naming the animals Gen 2:21-23 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.”
Notice God did not name the being which he had removed from Adam’s side. She was referred to as “Woman” It was not until after their rebellion against God and she had given birth to their first child that Adam named her “Eve” Gen 3:20 Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living. Notice Adam did not “just” pick a name. He named her “Eve” for this identified he as a special person which had done a very precious thing of bringing the first child into the world. Evidently God approved of the woman’s name for it is frequently used through the writing of the Bible.
Not only does God require living things to have a name. His desire reaches into the heavens He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name Ps 147:4.
Isa 40:26 Lift your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing. After the disobedient act of treason committed by Adam and deception of the woman. God then predicted the one which would redeem fallen man from the rebellion. However, God did not name the redeemer but referred to him as “The woman’s seed” Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”
The first mention of God promised redemption were not only prophetic words of one who will bruise and walk upon the head of Satan, but also foretells of the “woman’s seed” would destroy the government of the ruling authority by entering his domain to set free those made prisoners due to Adam selling the human race to the power of darkness. Adam and Eve having now been driven from the garden and having to adjust to the rigor of life without the contentment of the garden’s many pleasures they established their residence and began a family. Gen 4:1
Adam lay with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man.” The name Cain means “to acquire” or “possess.” A careful study of the statement ” I have gotten a man” meaning she believed her son would be the one to conquer the serpent as God had spoken to Satan. Time would soon reveal she had not given birth got to the Messiah (Anointed One) but to one which scripture defines as who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. 1 John 3:12b. For Eve to make such an assumption reveals her misunderstanding of “the woman’s seed”. Had she understood she would have realized the Messiah would be born without the involvement of a man but would be conceived by a Devine act of God. Had Adam and Eve’s first-born child been the Messiah his name would have been “Cain”. Needless to say, Adam and Eve were thinking with a depraved mind for they assumed responsibility as parents of the supposed messiah by choosing to name him Cain. Apparently, they believed they were in charge of the situation but failed to understand God had his timing for the birth of the true messiah and held in reserve a name for the Messiah which told of his character, personality, and description of his purpose of birth.
Prophecies of the coming Messiah
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isa 9:6
The prophet Isaiah uttered those words six hundred years before they were to be fulfilled showing us God preparations are never disorganized, he is a God of order which causing all things to come into conformity to his will with perfect timing. Before proceeding let us review the history of God’s timing
Isa 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel
Let us notice the foreknowledge of God knowing the personal life and biology of the woman. God also knew precisely where she lived. He knew her relatives and to whom she was engaged to be married.
26.And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. Luke 1:26-27
And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.37 For with God nothing shall be impossible. Luke 1:36-37
Micah 5:2 “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”
Hab. 2:3 For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it lingers, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.
The appointed time had arrived for God to put his plans into action He sent the Angel Gabriel to speak with the one which he had chosen to be the mother of his son.
Now was the appointed time for scripture to be fulfilled which declares God will manifest himself in a body made of flesh.
“but a body have you prepared for me”; Heb 10:5c.
A body have you prepared for me
Luke 1:26-35 God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee,
27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. 31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32 He will be
great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.” 34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So, the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her. Luke 1:38
Matt.1:18-21 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.
19 Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
We now hear Gabriel affirm Mary will give birth to One which will bruise the serpents head. Her child’s name will tell the world who he is and reveal the purpose of his birth. His name is called Jesus for he will deliver his people from their sins. This is the child which the scriptures declare he will be the sacrifice which will end animal sacrifices because his life will be given to forever destroy the power of sin.
Another matter to be made known concerning the birth of the son of God is, he was to be born in a city foretold at least 600 years before the occurrence by the prophet Isaiah. Joseph and Mary were living in Nazareth but the city foretold by the prophet where the son of God was to be born was Bethlehem. This did not confuse God for his plan was unfolding exactly as he had planned.
In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.
2 (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.)
3 And everyone went to his own town to register.
4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. Luke 2:1-4
6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born,
7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. 8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:6-11.
Luke 2:11-12 unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
Notice the phrase “this day” “This day was a special day. Jesus’ birth date
did not “just” happen His birth date was designed step by step by God to happen the exact district, town, year, month, day and hour! Even the cave in which animals were housed was designed by God. Had God desired his son to be born is a comfortable room at the inn, the opportunity would have been available for Mary to give birth there.
Now was the fullness of time for the plan of God to take place
4 But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, Gal 4:4
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14
God does not administer haphazardly. He always works by plan with purpose. As an example of how God plans each step of his plan let us compare Gen 15:13 with Exodus 12:40-41 And he said unto Abram, know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years. Exodus 12:40-41 (Amp. Bible)40 Now the time the Israelites dwelt in Egypt was 430 years. 41 At the end of the 430 years, even that very day, all the hosts of the Lord went out of Egypt. May our eyes be opened to see and our mind awakened to understand God may never be early but he will never be late. He had set an exact date for Israel to depart Israel. So, did he set an exact date for Jesus to be born.
And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb Luke 2:21
Was there a mistake in naming the son of God Jesus? Did not the prophets declare his name would be; Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, Emmanuel and the BRANCH. Did the angel Gabriel make a mistake? The answer in an emphatic NO! There was no mistake! A title is a term of dignity, honor, distinction or preeminence attached to the name by virtue of rank or office. A description of personality or character defining the person. Name defined; a word of phrase that represents the unique description of a person.
40 And the child (Jesus) grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him. Luke 2:40
52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men. Luke 2:52
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”
32 Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. 33 I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God. 35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God. John 1:29-34!
The words “Look, the Lamb of God” reminds us of the words spoken many years before by Abraham to his son Isaac saying “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together. Gen 22:8
Without question John was speaking by inspiration of the Holy Spirit for he was not only revealing Jesus was the Lamb which God had chosen as a sacrifice for sin he was also declaring Jesus was aware he was born to die an atoning death for those he declared “For the Son of Man came to seek for and to save what was lost.” Luke 19:10
Years later the Apostle Paul would write say ” who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, Gal 1:4
Jesus begins his ministry
When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on
him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” 23 Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. Luke 3:21-23
Jesus now having been baptized by John the Baptist he was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by Satan.
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. (Matt 4:1) having successfully completing forty days alone in the wilderness, defeating Satan’s each attempt to sway his confidence in the word of God to be the ways of eternal life. Jesus countered Satan’s strong propositions and offers by declaring the written word of God as the means of truth and weapon to destroy all the work of Satan’s ungodly dominion. Consider the scriptures below to help understand the temptations which Satan presented to Jesus tempting him as he tempted Adam in the garden of Eden.
For everything in the world — the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does — comes not from the Father but from the world.
17 The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever. 1 John 2:16-17
Let us carefully notice the words used to introduce us to Jesus’ beginning of ministry,”
A brief mention of the kingdom of God
15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!” Mark 1:15
The words spoken by Jesus are saying ” The authority and power of God’ chosen king will soon be revealed. You must turn from obeying the power of sin and allow the spiritual authority of God to reign in your inmost being.
Jesus was not introducing a new kingdom but was encouraging people to turn from their ungodly ways and prepare themselves for the kingdom and king which the prophets Isaiah and Daniel foretold was now ready to be revealed. Let us hear the words of Isaiah first
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. Isa 9:6-7
The prophet Daniel
I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him.14 And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed. Dan 7:13-14
With the words of the prophets burning in his heart he fervently embraced the task set before him to reveal he is the king which was to come. (Compare Jn. 11:27)
Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. 15 He taught in their synagogues, and everyone praised him. 16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read. Matt. 4:13-16
The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” 20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, 21 and he began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing. From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Matt 4:17-21
Such actions and words can be spoken only by one assured their mission has been ordained by God. Having this confidence assures them the work at hand will be accomplished by God working in and through them. Such confidence and ability cannot go unnoticed by the hearer.
All the people were amazed and said to each other, “What is this teaching? With authority and power, he gives orders to evil spirits and they come out!” Luke 4:36
News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed, and he healed them. Matt 4:24
Not only did the populace recognized Jesus spoke and ministered with authority, so did demon spirits recognize an authority greater than theirs demanded their obedience.
29 And behold, they cried out, “What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?”
30 Now a herd of many pigs was feeding at some distance from them.
31 And the demons begged him, saying, “If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of pigs.”
32 And he said to them, “Go.” So, they came out and went into the pigs, and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the waters. Matt 8:29-32
Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, 24 “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God 25 “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!”
26 The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.!” Mark 1:23-26
But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
29 “Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can rob his house. Matt 12:28-29
12 As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the town was with her.
13 And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to
her, “Do not weep.”
14 Then he came up and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.”
15 And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. Luke 7:12-15
These are but a few examples which reveal Jesus affirming his authority over the kingdom of darkness. Why? We may ask was it necessary for Jesus to manifest his authority over evil spirits and death?
Jesus boldly declaring “repent for the kingdom of God is at hand”. He showed the hearer the power and authority of the kingdom of God by fearlessly marching into the strong man’s house to prove a greater authority now being exercised which prohibit the strong man to continue as slave master over his household.
Truly, each of Jesus’ performances demonstrated “the kingdom of God is greater than the kingdom of darkness. Each healing, each casting out of demons, each raising of the dead was a display of Jesus having authority over all the works of the power of darkness. Jesus’ words were enlightenment which dispelled darkness in lives of the hearer. It can be honestly said every area he visited was never the same after his visit.
Jesus reveals his source of power and authority.
1. I have come in my Father’s name, John 5:43a What Jesus was saying is “I have come with my Father’s attributes having permission to do as he has directed me. And to say what he tells me to say.
2.The miracles I do in my Father’s name speak for me, John 10:25b.
3.So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am [the one I claim to be] and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.
29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.” John 8:28-29
Jesus gave them this answer: “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because
whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these. John 5:19-20
For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it. I know that his command leads to eternal life. So, whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.” John 12:49-50
For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority. Colossians 2:9-10
18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 2 Cor. 5:18-19
Why? you may ask do we include the above scriptures. The answer is; to demonstrate Jesus’ confidence of the Spirit of God working through him to accomplished the miracles and wonders
Jesus testifies concerning the works accomplished.
When John heard in prison what Christ was doing, he sent his disciples 3 to ask him, “Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?” 4 Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: 5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor. 6 Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me.” Matt 11:2-6
The words Jesus told John’s disciples echo the words prophesied by Isaiah the prophet “3 Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way; 4 say to those with fearful hearts, “Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you.”
5 Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. 6 Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert. Isa 35:3-6
Jesus having now chosen 12 men to teach and prepare for ministry by setting an example for them to see him minister the message of freedom from darkness to light. from pain and suffering to restored health with liveliness and endurance.
It was now time for Jesus to share his ministry with his disciples by authorize them to speak as his representatives by allowing them to speak and act as though they were him.
Authority defined
Authority is designated power to act as a representative on the behalf of the one sending you to stand in for himself by speaking and doing as he would do.
Allow me to share excerpts from Kenneth Hagin Sr booklet” Authority of the believer”. In rush hour traffic when great numbers of cars are crowding the streets, policemen merely raise their hands and cars stop. The policeman can’t hold back the automobiles. He doesn’t have the physical strength. However, he is invested with the authority to stop and start traffic by the government which he represents. Authority is delegated power.
The 12 disciples having been with Jesus for a interval of time seeing and hearing Jesus demonstrate the kingdom of God. It was now time for them to put into practice what they had learned.
Without doubt Jesus had total confidence that now was the correct time to send the 12 to do as they had been taught. Notice what Jesus said to them;
Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.7 And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. 8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give. Matt 10:1-8
The commission “to go” surely was received with great enthusiasm and expectation in that they told to do the same thing they had witnessed their teacher doing. Mark 6:12-13
And they went out, and preached that men should repent. 13 And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and
healed them. Luke 10:1-24
This event should not be confused with the sending out of the twelve disciples. There are similarities in the charges given, but this – is to be expected since both groups were sent by the same Master to do the same basic job. The 12 Apostles ministered throughout Galilee, but these men were sent into Judea, and the men in this chapter are not called Apostles. They were undisclosed disciples which were willing to obey the call of God to do as Jesus had asked them to do..
After these things the Lord appointed another seventy sending them two and two before his face into every city and place whither, he himself would come.
17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. Luke 10:1,17-20
18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
It is reasonable conclusion both the 12 apostles and the 70 disciples were preaching and doing miracles “in Jesus name”. For to attempt to preach and do miracles in their own name would have been a total disaster. In that Jesus commissioned them to go he also authorized them to be his spokes person guaranteeing he would ” confirm ” their preaching and miraculous works he had commissioned them to do
Jesus having sent two groups, at different times, indicates he had appointed them to be representatives of the mission God had given him to do. He gave both groups authority to speak using the authority of his name. Means they could speak as though Jesus himself was speaking. As authorized messenger who has the power to make decisions and to represent the will of the person they represented. They were official representative authorized to speak on behalf of the one sending them represent his kingdom. It is interesting to notice how those having Godly authority were increasing in number. At first Jesus, alone manifested authority. When He gave authority to the 12 disciples then to 72
followers. Whether their authority continued once their mission was completed could be questioned but the fact remains, they did function in the same authority as did Jesus for the entire assignment Mark 6:12-13 12 And they went out, and preached that men should repent. 13 And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.
As ambassadors, we are here to be His physical presence to speak as he would speak and take action as he would. We will speak in more detail later in this study.
The above scriptures remind us of another Biblical character which sent his servants before him to deliver a message of his coming to visit the individual
5 So he sent ten young men and said to them, “Go up to Nabal at Carmel and greet him in my name. 6 Say to him: ‘Long life to you! Good health to you and your household! And good health to all that is yours!
7 “‘Now I hear that it is sheep-shearing time. When your shepherds were with us, we did not mistreat them, and the whole time they were at Carmel nothing of theirs was missing.
8 Ask your own servants and they will tell you. Therefore, be favorable toward my young men, since we come at a festive time. Please give your servants and your son David whatever you can find for them.’”
9 When David’s men arrived, they gave Nabal this message in David’s name. 1 Sam 25:5-9
Notice it was the leader of the young men which sent them on the mission. David told them to where to go. He then gave them the authority to speak as though it was, he himself speaking.” use his name ” greet him in my name” In other words David told them to speak as though he himself was speaking.
We should not consider the above scriptures as “just a historical fact” but view them as an example of speaking in the name of the authority which has never ceased but will continue as a declaration which endures throughout the ages.
In the closing days of Jesus ministry, he said “ I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even
greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. John 14:12
At first reading this verse could cause one to believe Jesus was finished with his earthly ministry and had no plans to partner with those he left behind. But when we read
Nevertheless, I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. John 16:7
Notice what one of the things the Holy Spirit will do after Jesus goes away . John 16: 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore, I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you
Comparing 1 Cor. 12:8-10 8 To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit,
to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
After reading 1 Cor. 16:15 we could correctly translate Jn. 16:15 t to say “the Holy Spirit will take what is mine and will give it to you.”
However, the Holy Spirit will not take the thing which belong to Jesus until he dies on the cross, is buried for three days and night is resurrected and ascends into heaven
From one seed many seed produced
“The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. John 12:23-24
Jesus was using an agricultural illustration to explain a spiritual
principle. The seed to which Jesus referred to is himself. He was actually saying “I am the seed. If I do not fall into the ground and die, I will remain to be one seed. But if I fall into the ground and die, I will spring up into a stalk which will produce many plants equivalent to me. This is not to say there will be many “only begotten” stalks as Jesus for there will always be only one Jesus, only one pattern son of God. After his death there will be many sons of God made in “the only begotten” likeness. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of His Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. Rom 8:29.
For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, Rom 8:13-16
We have read facts and promises but have not seen the complete interpretation of what Jesus was talking of we must understand. there are four key essentials must occur before the product of the unique seed’s crop would emerge.
1. The Seed must suffer death
Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. John 19:30
Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death — that is, the devil— 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. Heb 2:14-15
2. The Seed must be buried being in the grave three days and three nights
For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Matt 12:40
3. The seed must be resurrected
The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.
7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.” Matt 28:5-7
Now that Jesus’ resurrection declares defeat of the “Strong man” and that Jesus had conquered death, hell and the grave.
Or else how can one enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he first binds the strong man? and then he will spoil his house. Matt 12:29
The Apostle Paul offers comment into the power of Jesus’ resurrection
I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, 20 which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. Eph 1:18-21
4. Jesus must go away. (we will speak more of this topic later in the study)
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. John 16:7
The body of Christ
Earlier in Jesus’ ministry a young man inquired concerning where Jesus lived 20 Jesus replied, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”. Matt 8:20
Jesus was not saying he had no place to sleep for scripture tell us
37 Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple, and each evening he went out to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives,
38 and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple. Luke 21:37-38
The scriptures do not tell us whether Jesus did or did not have a house. However, they indicate he frequently slept having stars for covering. I do not believe housing was the most important issue in stating “no place to rest my head”.
The following scriptures will show us the true meaning of Jesus statement of where and how Jesus “rest his head”.
13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Matt. 16:13-18
A certain denomination understands the phrase “on this rock I will build my church” to mean Jesus appointed Peter as the most important means of building a church. However, their understanding does not align with the scriptures we will read. Jesus was not telling Peter he was the stone on which the church was to be built but was saying ” I will build my church upon the revelation Peter just spoke which is ” Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God”. That statement is the foundational truth of which the church is built.
The words of the prophet Zechariah concerning who will build the church
‘Here is the man whose name is the Branch, and he will branch out from his place and build the temple of the Lord.
It is he who will build the temple of the Lord, and he will be clothed with majesty and will sit and rule on his throne. And he will be a priest on his throne. And there will be harmony between the two.’ Zech 6:12-13.
Though scripture clearly reveal that Jesus is the founder and the builder of his church. there is no scripture showing he built a physical building of stone and wood. But he will and did build a house made of “living
stones” (Pet.2:5)
. Preparing materials for building
After Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection he again commissioned the apostles and all other believers to be his earthly ambassadors
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matt 28:18-20
A look at the words “all power”
The whole amount or quantity. Includes all the forms of. Every kind or variety. Highest degree. By His death and resurrection, Jesus defeated all enemies and won for Himself all authority.
Therefore, God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Phil 2:9-11
There is no power or authority in heaven, hell or earth greater than the power and authority given me. I am now telling you to go into all the world representing me and my kingdom teaching them to obey what I have taught you. Be assured I, the One with all earthly and heavenly power, will be with you until the end.
After Jesus assured his disciples of his authority and power, He then assured them they would have the same authority as himself. we were more than qualified to rule any situation they may confront he assured them they would not go alone for he would go with them having the same power and authority
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. Matt 28:19-20
I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” Luke 24:49
What, we may ask was the promise of the Father? It was not only receiving power and authority. Neither was it “speaking in tongues”. The promise of the Father was the Holy Spirit would no longer be a presence in an earthly (constructed by man) tabernacle but would take residence in the heart of those which had accepted Him as Messiah and Savior of mankind.
But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. 2 Cor. 4:7.
Let us harmonize; Matt.28:18-19, St. Mark 16: 15-18 and Luke 24:47-49
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20
17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues;
18 they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.” Mark 16:17-18
Thus, it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, 47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem
48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” 50 Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. 51 While he blessed them, he
parted from them and was carried up into heaven.
52 And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple blessing God. Luke 24:46-53
Combining the three gospels it could be harmonized as such:
Jesus said “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues;
they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover
And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. 51 While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple blessing God.
Jesus ascended
It could be determined Jesus’ ascension into heaven brought a close to his personal, earthly ministry. Far be that from truth. His ascension into heaven was not a farewell but was a means of knowing Jesus the Christ in a manner not previously known to them. Let me offer an explanation of what I mean. From their introduction to Jesus they knew him as a physical being with all the physical attributes of a human such as; he hungered, got tired and thirsty. So, from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 2 Cor. 5:16 A point of view from the Amplified Bible helps us understand the phrase “Though we once regarded Christ in this way”
Let us also consider the scripture from the Amplified Bible:
Consequently, from now on we estimate and regard no one from
[purely] human point of view [in terms of natural standards of value]. [No] even though we once did estimate Christ from a human viewpoint and as a man, yet now [we have such knowledge of Him that] we know Him no longer [in terms of the flesh]. 2 Cor. 5:16
First. We must not understand these scriptures to tell us we should forget about Jesus’ physical life on earth. But it is telling us to see him no longer as a physical being which grew weary, tired, hungry and capable of being but one place at a time to know Christ “after the flesh” means to remember him from a human point of view. But “the days of His flesh” have changed because He has ascended to heaven and is now glorified at the Father’s right hand. We must remember the words he spoke before ascending into heaven and surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matt 28:20
While on Earth Jesus could be at one geographical area at a given time. Though Jesus ascended into heaven he promised to be with them. “Them” meaning a multimember congregation which proliferated to all nations of the world.
Secondly. We must now see Jesus as the one which was crucified, buried and risen from the dead never to die again. Though Jesus personal, physical body is no longer on earth the results of his death, burial and resurrection will forever remain the elements which bring salvation to mankind. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. Heb 1:3-4
The Amplified Bible Acts 1:8 But you shall receive power (ability, efficiency, and might) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the ends (the very bounds) of the earth.
Ten days after his ascension into heaven the promise of the Father begin to be fulfilled on the day of Pentecost. After an assembly of about 120 believers were gathered in an upper room in obedience to Jesus command, waiting in an upper room in Jerusalem for the words which
Jesus spoke “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
They waited until the Day of Pentecost had fully come, but they didn’t know ahead of time how long they would have to wait. It would be easy for them to think it would come the same afternoon Jesus ascended to heaven; or after 3 days, or 7 days. But they had to wait a full 10 days, until the Day of Pentecost had fully come.
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them. Acts 2:1-4
Before proceeding let us look into the statement “all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit”. This verse should be understood to mean ” the Spirit of the Living God moved from the material tabernacle of Solomon into the physical and spiritual lives of the (about) 120 disciples. The Apostle Paul helps us understand the meaning of ” Filled with the Holy Spirit” by telling us; ”
Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfill the word of God;
26 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: 27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory Col 1:25
We can now better understand Heb 12:2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Jesus knew the physical and emotional pain he would suffer the cross but also knew his death would be the planting of “the seed” which would result in producing many seeds like unto itself. Having such knowledge gave him great joy for he would have a many member family which will
also known as “the church, the body of Christ.
Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you? 1 Cor. 3:16
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your body. 1 Cor. 6:19-20
The mystery which had been concealed for ages is now being revealed. The mystery is; The Spirit of God permanently moved from the man-made structure, (such as Solomon’s temple) into a temple not made with human hands.
But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us 2 Cor. 4:7.
As we move into the next section of the study, I ask you to remember;
1. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Matt 28:18
2.Jesus said” I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.
20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you”. John 14:18-20
Building of temple of the Lord
Tell him this is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Here is the man whose name is the Branch, and he will branch out from his place and build the temple of the Lord. 13 It is he who will build the temple of the Lord, and he will be clothed with majesty and will sit and rule on his throne. And he will be a priest on his throne. And there will be harmony between the two.’ Zech 6:12-13
The Holy Spirit of God had now moved from the tabernacle made with human hands into the hearts and lives of the followers of Jesus Christ clothing their “new, born again, inner man with power and authority authorized by the Holy Spirit.
The first church of God numbered about 120 members Let us rephrase the statement by saying “Jesus, the Master builder had placed the first 120 stones upon the foundation of the building he was beginning to build. (Compare 1 Pet. 2:5).
Notice how their lives were changed from fearful to powerful. From weakness to powerful
And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. Acts 4:33
From timidly to boldness.
Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus Acts 4:13.
From doubt to confidence. From selfishness to willingness to sharing their belongings
Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,35 And laid them down at the apostles’ feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.
Joyfully endured suffering and pain for the name of Jesus Acts 5:40-41
and when they had called in the apostles, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 41 Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name. Acts 4:34-35
The identity now given to those which had received “the empowering Spirit of God’ And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. Acts 2:47.
Notice the phrase “added to the church” As was previously stated the “church” began with “about 120” which were gathered in the upper room on the day of Pentecost.
The name “Church” is the foremost name used throughout the book of Acts (and other books of the Bible) to identify the disciples of Jesus Christ.
From the time Jesus began building “My church” he could now say “I have a place to rest my head”. This is another way of saying “when the church was born, Jesus took his position as “Head” of the body of Christ”
And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy Col 1:18
And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way. Eph 1:22-23
It is important we understand “the body of Christ” and “the church “are identical in meaning.
What does “Jesus is the head of the body” mean?
Before we can understand the body of Christ, we must understand Jesus is not the body of Christ. He has a position in the body. He is head of the body. The following scripture will help us understand that the head is a part of the body and not the complete body
The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So, it is with Christ. 1 Cor. 12:12
Consider the following scriptures
And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. Col 1:18
From him (Jesus) the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. Eph 4:16
Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household,
20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus
himself as the chief cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit. Eph 2:19-22
But Christ is faithful as a son over God’s house. And we are his house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast. Heb 3:6
Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is sacred, and you are that temple. 1 Cor. 3:16-17
What? Don’t you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 1 Cor. 6:19
.
When do you become a member of the body of Christ?
The life-giving Spirit of God enters into our live at the time we receive Jesus as Lord and Savior.
You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. Rom 8:9
12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. John 1:12-13
That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. John 3:6. It is unfortunate many Christians are not aware they are presentence sons of God. Not knowing this fact to prevent from understanding they presentence have the character, nature, personality, authority and power of their Father God abiding within them. It can be said “like Father like son”.
An excellent example is the natural impregnation of a human being; Life enters into the female ovum when the spermatozoa becomes one with the ovum. Had the ovum not received the spermatozoa there would have been no impartation of live. So, it is when one receives Jesus Christ into their life. If you have received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior you are a member of the body of Christ.
And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God. Gal 4:6-7
Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 1 John 3:2
Now that we have received the Life of the Lord Jesus Christ into our lives, we are now a member of the same body as the Head. Jesus is the head of the body. We, the born-again Christian, make up the remainder of his body.
The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So, it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body — whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free — and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 Now the body is not made up of one part but of many I Cor. 12:12-14.
Why? You may ask, why do we speak of the body of Christ? The answer is because the completeness of Jesus Christ is in the church, the body of Christ. When Jesus said “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. (Matt 28:18) He was actually saying ” the authority I have received belongs to every member of the body of Christ. Consider the following scriptures:
And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues;
18 they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.” Mark 16:17-18
Healing of the lame man demonstrates how Peter and John recognized the authority of Jesus Christ operated through them by declaring they had the authority and power of the Holy Spirit by stating “but what I do have I give to you”. The thing which Peter had to give was the authority and power invested in him to speak in Jesus’ name.
Peter and John could perform miracles because they knew the same personality, character, nature, authority and power of Spirit of God was resident within them.
6 But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” 7 And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. Acts 3:6-7
How can Jesus be an individual being and at the same time have the position of Head of the body Head?
4 For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Rom 12:4-5
To answer this question let us remember we are a spirit and soul which live in a body of clay
23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.; 1 Thess. 5:23
7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. 2 Cor. 4:7
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So, glorify God in your body. 1 Cor. 6:19-20
From the above scriptures we conclude the answer to the question is; we live in a physical body housing an inner man. It is the inner man which has a permanent spiritual position as a member of the multi-member body of Christ, which is the church.
Though all members of the body of Christ has the right to participate in the authority of Jesus Christ, not all do, due to various reasons. We will discuss some of those reasons in a later section of this booklet.
We must understand every born-again believer has a position in the body
of Christ. There is no such thing as a born-again believer being a floating
member. Believing a highly exalted title gives special placement outside the body of Christ, proves your imagination is very much out of order for such thinking is to say you are superior to Jesus Christ, which is a member of the body of which you believe superiority sets you above the head, which said “all authority and power in heaven and earth is given to me”. The fact is the Spirit of God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19 If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body. 1 Cor. 12:18-20.
Though many members each member has personal identity but the same Spirit in each. There is one body and one Spirit— Eph 4:4
These scriptures show Jesus is not the only member of the body of Christ His position and his alone is “head” of the body. From the head come all instructions and commands for proper functioning of each member of the body. Jesus’ statement in John 15:4-5 put forward a very clear understanding of the significance of his position and role in the body of Christ. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. From these verses we conclude Jesus’ life is the flow of vitality and governing authority to and for the other members of his body. Though Jesus has an exalted position in the body notice his status does not detract from the body but complements the overall comeliness of that which he, himself is a member.
If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. 1 Cor. 12:26.
We can understand every victory Jesus won belong not only to himself but to each member of the body of Christ.
Under his feet
The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of
our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Rom 16:20.
Though this scripture is telling the church in Rome the God of peace will soon bring victory to their situation he was also referring to the feet of the body of Christ defeating Satan.
Such statement reminds us of the words God spoke to Satan in the garden of Eden
I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” Gen 3:15
There were two victories to be obtained over Satan. By the first, his head was to be bruised under the feet of Jesus Christ; and by the second, the rest by the body of Christ will be bruised under the feet of the believers. In the first prediction, God speaks as the Lord of Hosts, the God of war ‘I will put enmity.’ The war continues till the bruising of Satan’s head has taken place, and his empire is overthrown, peace is made, and God is the God of peace. As, then, the seed of the woman has bruised the head of the serpent, so the church, the body of Christ will with Jesus, the head likewise bruise Satan. The victory will be ours as we have exercised his power and authority to accomplish the goal.
As the head is “grand central” of the body, so the feet cannot be denied their importance. It is they which, in cooperation with each member of the body, will stomp upon the very head of Satan. We must ask why doesn’t Jesus stomp upon Satan’s head. Answer is It is also Jesus trampling Satan’s head. But not as an individual member. Remember, He is the head which gives leadership as to what and how to trample Satan’s head. Does that mean Jesus is not involved in the battle? The answer is all the body is involved in the trampling of Satan’s head. We must remember; For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body— Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. 1 Cor. 12:12-13
I also pray that your mind might see more clearly. Then you will know the hope God has chosen you to receive. You will know that the things God’s people will receive are rich and glorious.19 And you will know his great power. It can’t be compared with anything else. It is at work for us who believe. It is like the mighty strength 20 God showed when he
raised Christ from the dead. He seated him at his right hand in his heavenly kingdom.21 There Christ sits far above all who rule and have authority. He also sits far above all powers and kings. He is above every title that can be given in this world and in the world to come.
22 God placed all things under Christ’s rule. He appointed him to be ruler over everything for the church.23 The church is Christ’s body. It is filled by Christ. He fills everything in every way. Eph 1:18-23
Notice the beautiful words describing the victory accomplished by Jesus working through his church, the body of Christ.
And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. 11 And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death. Rev. 12:10-11
As a child attending church, I often heard a song titled “Hold the fort” Each member would hold a white handkerchief in their hand waving it as they sang with gusto ” hold the fort for I coming Jesus signals still. Wave the answer back to heaven by thy grace I will.” I wondered why Christians with a powerful leader as Jesus Christ would have to hide in a fort trembling with fear their enemy would pounce on them, annihilating them which had been serving the One which said ” I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. Matt 16:18.
Didn’t Jesus say “From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force” Matt 11:12
The same Holy Spirit which spoke the above scriptures also said
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Eph 6:11-13
For the church to embrace such teaching as the body of Christ hiding in a fort trembling with fear is an insult to Jesus Christ, for it is an admission
he also is fearful of losing the battle thus causing his body to be destroyed by the enemy. The church had evidently forgotten Jesus has already defeated by his death, burial and resurrection.
And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. Col. 2:15.
I love the Amplified Bible translation of Matt. 16::18 Matt 16:18
“the gates of Hades (the powers of the infernal region) shall not overpower it [or be strong to its detriment or hold out against it].
It is easily understood the church; the body of Christ always have the victory because they are members of the same body with Jesus Christ the Victor
Hear the words again which Jesus, the One which has never lost, nor will ever lose a battle, has promised “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. Rom 16:20
Such words do not sound like words spoken by a trembling with fear Savior but sounds like a Victor which has and always will be victorious regardless how rigorous the battle may be.
It is Spirit of God coming into your life which makes you to be a new creation (see 2 Cor. 5:17). Now that we are a “new man” The offer and promise of God is to clothe us with his strength and ability which is more than sufficient to win even the brutal battle.
You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 1 John 4:4
If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. Rom 8:11
Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
The apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade. 13 No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. 14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number. 15 As a
result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by.16 Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by evil spirits, and all of them were healed. Acts 5:12-16
Allow me to share what I believe the wording used by those sent to spoke in Jesus name proclaiming the message of the kingdom of God.
” We have been sent by Jesus Christ to tell you to turn from disregarding the word of God. Repent of this wickedness that you may enjoy relationship and fellowship with God.
When casting out a demon spirit. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour. Acts 16:18
I do not believe he continued to scream commands at them for they knew they were being commanded by a servant of God functioning with authority approved by God.
When praying for the sick with the anointing of oil.
33 There he found a man named Aeneas, bedridden for eight years, who was paralyzed. 34 And Peter said to him, “Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you; rise and make your bed.” And immediately he rose. Acts 9:33-34.
Actions such as these confirms the newly formed body of Christ, the church, was now exercising the same authority as did Jesus to triumph over the kingdom of darkness
Though the Apostle Peter and Paul had wonderful ministries they never exalted themselves, for they realized power and authority is in the name of Jesus. They believed they could do exactly as Jesus said they could do. They knew to speak, act or pray “in Jesus name” means they were doing as if Jesus was standing with them in person,
An inaccuracy believed by some Christians is the Apostles were the only ones commissioned to be ambassador of the kingdom of God. Many have been taught the office of an Apostle, and Prophets ended with the death of the original Apostles. Sadly, they have deprived themselves of the ministries God has intended for leadership and guidance for the church to trample the kingdom of darkness under their feet.
A look at Eph. 4:10-14
Before commenting on these scriptures, I ask you to please stop reading, get your Bible and see if it agrees with the scriptures listed below.
Eph 4:10 He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.) 11 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. Eph 4:11-14
Let us take the scriptures verse by verse
Verse 10 He who descended and ascended is Jesus the Christ.
Verse 11 He (Jesus) gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers,
Verse 12 explains why the ministries were given to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.
Verse 13 explains how long the five ministries will be needed for ministry to the church until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
Verse 14. Tells why the ministries are needed. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming.
Question needing an answer
1. Who gave the ministries to the church?
Answer. Jesus did
2.When and why did Jesus remove the ministries from the church?
Answer. There is no Biblical reference stating he did.
3. How can you know Jesus has not removed the ministries from the church?
Answer. The church has not come to the unity of the faith in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
Should you question this answer, I challenge you to look in your phone book under the title of churches. There you will find numerous listings of denominations which most if not all have embraced differing doctrines and declaring those which disagree with their doctrinal beliefs to be misinformed and cultist.
4. What are the results of forbidding or denying the existence of the five gift ministries?
Answer: Without the functioning of a God ordained, anointed Bible teacher/ pastor which strives to rightly divide the word of God (2 Tim 2:15) places their church in jeopardy to limited understanding of the word of God producing immature followers which are tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. This is why all churches should have the five ministries available for periodic visitations that the church can partake of preparing God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
Why have I placed this portion in the study? Because without a balanced nutritional regime of the word of God limits authority fully function in power and authority which is rightfully ours.
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow your righteous laws. Ps 119:105-106
Two bold believers acted on words Jesus spoke
Let us briefly view the account of two (of the seven) ordinary men which were selected by the Spirit of God speaking through dedicated men to appoint them to a ministry of delivering food to widows and others in need. These two in particular were bold in stepping out to act on the words Jesus had spoken
In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian
Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. 2 So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. 3 Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them 4 and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.” 8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people. Acts 6:1-4, 8
Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed to them the Christ. 6 And the crowds with one accord paid attention to what was being said by Philip when they heard him and saw the signs that he did. 7 For unclean spirits came out of many who were possessed, crying with a loud voice, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. 8 So there was much joy in that city. Acts 8:5-8
It is very important to acknowledge Stephen and Phillip were not apostles but were men which had desire to do obey what they had been taught by the Holy Spirit speaking through their church leaders.
Never allow yourself to think you are insignificant in the overall plan which God has for His church.
You are an ambassador! You represent Jesus Christ to your family, to your place of employment, and to your neighborhood. You have been invested with royal powers, including the name of Jesus and the authority of His blood You can call upon Heaven to assist you at any given moment! All angelic powers and all the vast resources stored in the treasury of Heaven are available for your use when representing Jesus Christ to this world!
Following article written by Pastor Rick Renner
Col 2:15And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. The word spoiled is the Greek word apekduomai, which means to strip off or to put off as one would put off his garments. This word could depict the disarming of an enemy literally stripping his weaponry and artillery from him and leaving him without any weapons with which to respond. One scholar has noted that it refers to stripping one to the point of complete nakedness. By using this word, the Holy Spirit tells us that when Jesus arose from the dead, He thoroughly plundered the enemy!
Furthermore, when Jesus’ sacking and plundering of hell’s powers was complete and His mission was accomplished, Paul tells us that He rubbed this defeat in the devil’s face by throwing the biggest party the universe had ever seen! Colossians 2:15 says, and having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
The word shew is taken from the word deigmatidzo, and it literally means to display or to expose something. It was used in classical Greek writing to denote the display of captives, weaponry, and trophies that were seized during war on foreign soil. Once the war was finished and the battle was won, the reigning emperor would return home and victoriously display and expose the treasures, trophies, weaponry, and captives that he had seized during his military conquest. This was a grand moment of celebration for the victor but it was a humiliating experience for the defunct foe.
But wait there is still more to Colossians 2:15 that you must understand. Paul goes on to tell us that …he made a shew of them openly…. The word openly is taken from the Greek word parresia, which is used throughout the books of the New Testament to denote boldness, confidence, or something that is done blatantly or even publicly. By using the word parresia, Paul declares that when this heavenly party and celebration of Jesus’ victory commenced, it was no quiet affair! On the contrary He boldly, confidently, loudly, blatantly, and publicly exposed and displayed this now-defunct foe to the heavenly hosts! It was the greatest celebration in history!
In fact, Paul goes on to say, …he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. The phrase triumphing over them in it is a major key to this verse. This phrase comes from the Greek word triambeuo, which is a technical word used to describe the general or emperor who was returning home from a grand victory in the enemy’s territory. The word triumph (triambeuo) was a specific word used to describe a glorious triumphal parade!
When news reached the city that the enemy had been defeated, plans for a triumphal parade went into action. By the time the gates of the city were opened wide to receive this emperor who was now returning home in triumph, his people were ready to celebrate his victory! As the gates swung open and this mighty warrior rode through, the celebration began!
Sitting astride a large, beautiful, white stallion; draped in his kingly,
regal garments; and wearing his bright, shining crown upon his head, the returning emperor would lead the entire city in a procession of celebration and victory. It was called his triumphal parade. As he rode down the main avenue of the city with his head held high and a look of elation on his face, the city would begin rejoicing. He’s back! He’s back! Our king has won a massive victory! the people would cry as they broke into jubilant dancing and singing, joyously twirling around in circles. This was indeed a time to rejoice!
In order to flaunt his great victory, the returning victor would parade behind him the foreign king the defeated foe, taken in captivity and bound in heavy chains of bondage. Behind this now-defunct enemy would walk the defeated ruling men and leaders, bound and chained along with their ruined king. Further back in the procession were oxcarts loaded to overflowing with booty taken by force from the enemy’s homeland. Once these goods had belonged to the enemy, but now they belonged to the conquering king!
As the returning, victorious emperor rode down the avenue, he’d strut with pride, flaunting his defeated foes. In other words, he’d make a shew of them openly. He wanted everyone to see the fabulous goods he had taken from his enemy’s hand proof that the conquered foe had been completely spoiled.
But the most exciting moment of the entire celebration occurred when the emperor sang a song of victory. As he rode that horse through the gate, leading his triumphal parade, he would open his mouth and begin to sing as loudly as he could sing! With all his might, he would sing something like this: The enemy is defeated; the foe is conquered; let it be known that I am still the king! This song would throw the crowd into a frenzy. This was the voice and the song they had been waiting for! The king had returned, and he was still king!
Then, after riding down the main avenue, revealing his booty, and singing his song of victory, the victor would stop in front of a large set of stairs that led upward to a huge, ornate throne. His military conquest had proven that he was still the holder of authority. Therefore, he proudly walked up those steps, turned toward the great crowd who was watching, and lowered himself down to sit in his rightful place the throne.
Since all this is the background to Colossians 2:15, the verse could be interpreted to read:
He completely stripped principalities and powers and left them utterly naked; nothing was left at their disposal with which to retaliate. He boldly, confidently, loudly, blatantly, and publicly exposed and displayed this now-defunct foe, leading a gallant triumphal parade in celebration of the enemy’s defeat and His victory!
Does all this mean that this actual type of celebration took place in Heaven after Jesus’ defeat of the devil? There is no explicit biblical account that records the type of celebration that occurred the day Jesus was raised from the dead, but Paul’s words in Colossians 2:15 certainly indicate that Heaven threw quite a party that day. Jesus’ victory over the devil was the greatest victory ever known! It would be entirely expected that Heaven would celebrate that victory with the Son of God.
So, if you feel like shouting when you think about what Jesus did to the devil, go ahead and shout! If thinking of Jesus’ victory makes you want to jump up and down, dance, or twirl around in circles, then go for it! There’s nothing strange about this behavior at all you have something to rejoice about! When you start rejoicing about Jesus’ victory over the devil, you join the throngs of Heaven who also wildly celebrate Jesus’ victory and Satan’s defeat!
Conclusion of article written by Pastor Rick Renner
How to live a life of authority and power
No soldier goes into battle without training for conflict, especially how to use his weapon. The greater the knowledge of the ability and capability of the weapon gives assurance it can be trusted to perform in a way to overcome and destroy the enemy. Unlike natural weapons of war, the weapons used to fight a spiritual battle must be spiritual weapons
For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 2 Cor. 10:4
This is why we are directed to take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, Eph 6:17
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of
joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Heb 4:12
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work. 2 Tim 3:16-17
When Jesus counteract Satan’s attacks it was not by boasting of his status of position or titles, Jesus relied on what he knew to be the greatest and most powerful weapon in all of creation. He took up “the sword of the spirit ” which is the word of God.
Notice the enemy brought the weapon of “doubt “If you are the Son of God, Matt 4:3
Notice Jesus had the weapon of the word of God. Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matt 4:4
It is important we notice Satan did not continue to pester Jesus concerning his hunger but redirected his attack to a different theme “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” (Matt 4:6) Satan had cleverly omitted the phrase “in all Thy ways” when he quoted from Psalm 91:11.
We must never take apart one part of Scripture from another, but we must always rightly handle the word of truth. 2 Tim 2:15
We can prove almost anything by the Bible if we isolate texts from the contexts and turn them into pretexts.
Jesus responded “It is written. “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Matt 4:7
Let us close this portion of the study by saying. Satan brought to the battle the weapon of doubt” if you be”. While Jesus manipulate
the sword of the Spirit winning the battle putting Satan to flight.
Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth. 2 Tim 2:15
Ways of involvement of Jesus name
1.Using Jesus name in prayer Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. John 14:13-14 Nowhere in scripture does it recommend praying to an idol, deceased relative, to the virgin Mary, stars, moon or any human being Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God.” Rev 19:10
2. Blessing the food we eat
4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5 for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer1 Tim 4:4-5.
3. We have the right to use His name against our enemies
And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness,
30 while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”
31 And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness. Acts 4:29-31
Be bold in battle. Open your mouth and say to your situations ” I command you in the name of Jesus to cease you activates” Remember you are speaking with the authority of Jesus Christ.
4. Including his name in praise and worship
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Col 3:16-17
5. Casting out demons
18 And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour. Acts 16:18
And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;18. They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. Mark 16:17-18
6. Praying for the sick, the lame and every type of illness
14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. James 5:14
7. Coming together in Jesus name
20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” Matt 18:20
8.In everything you do.
17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Col 3:17
I often command protection over the neighborhood in which I live. I speak the following words ” in the name of Jesus I command the thief cannot and will not function in this neighborhood. I command in the name of Jesus vandalism cannot and will not happen in this neighborhood. I command in the name of Jesus harassment, willful or not willful cannot and will not happen in this neighborhood. Thank you, Jesus, for the authority of your precious name, for the thief, the vandal and harassment is bound and must obey for I speak in the name of Jesus’.”
When directed by the Holy Spirit there is no restriction of what you can do. If Jesus did it so can you.
9. Warfare. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Eph. 6:12
10. Water baptism
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:38
11.Sing unto the Lord “in Jesus name”
19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; Eph 5:19-20
Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the Lord and to praise him for the splendor of his holiness as they went out at the head of the army, saying: “Give thanks to the Lord, for his love endures forever.”
22 As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated. 2 Chron. 20:21-22
All that Jesus was He still is for time has not and cannot grind down the power and authority of that name.
For the word of the king is supreme, and who may say to him, “What are you doing?” Eccl 8:4
Never be ashamed or embarrassed to speak the name of Jesus to any circumstance
Why, you may ask do we have to fight an enemy which Jesus has defeated?
Answer. Because he is a liar and deceiver
14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.
15 So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.
2 Cor. 11:14-15
44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. John 8:44
This is one of the major reasons we are encouraged to know the truth
Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Eph 6:17
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth2 Tim 2:15
Reasons why some members of the body of Christ exercise little or no power or authority?
1. Lack of fellowship with the Lord Jesus Christ in prayer and receiving nourishment from the ministry of word of God.
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. Heb 10:24-25
God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 Cor. 1:9
2.Deprived of proper teaching
And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,
14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, Eph 4:11-15
3.Personal reading and study of the word of God
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
16 But avoid irreverent babble, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness, 2 Tim 2:15-16
Hos. 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. The word “destroyed” does not necessarily mean immediate failure or perish but means to progressively come to defeat.
David said “Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.”Psalm 9:10,
4. Compromising of truth If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. It is not possible to function correctly in the Spirit of God with a heart filled with darkness. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 1 John 1:6-7.
To know the name of Jesus is to know Him intimately. It is more than knowing facts about God; it is coming into a deeper personal companionship with Him. Such closeness is a result of learning his ways and not just his acts. It is only as we know God in this personal way, we come to trust Him to do as he said he would do.
And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you. Ps 9:10
5.Failure to live a godly life
Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. 2 But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. Refusing to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God 2Cor. 4:1-2.
Do we experiment with witch craft, Ouija boards, tea leaf readings, séances (attempts to consulting the dead) consulting fortune tellers, consulting horoscopes, consulting witch doctors or dabbling in religions you know are wrong?
Do you avoid church attendance because of anger at the pastor or other members of the assembly and settle for a television program to ease your guilty conscience?
6. Speaking with a double tongue.
So also, the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water. James 3:6-12
7. Failure to establishing standards of truth
Sad to say we are living in a time when many Christians are influenced by “Ever body is doing it”. meaning if “they” are doing it must be right. A popular example is living together before marriage. Many Christian compromise their standards because of the strong appeal to “join the crowd”. Many have children out of wedlock thinking this practice is sanctioned by the doctrine of “ever one is doing it”. failing to realize the word of God clearly states
Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that commits fornication sins against his own body.1 Cor. 6:18.
2 But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband. 1 Cor. 7:2
They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good. Titus 1:16
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. James 1:5-8
Why, you ask do I speak of this subject? The answer is because it has found comfort in the hearts of many Christians and failure of the clergy to speak truth concerning the “ever one is doing it”.
11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water. James 3:11-12
It is impossible to have the power and authority of the Holy Spirit flowing through you when living in willful sin.
We are now at the end of the booklet. But nowhere near exhausting the subject of speaking in Jesus name. Hopefully you have found this booklet edifying and helpful to your walk with the Lord Jesus.
It is the intent of this booklet to share with you the fact you, presentence, do have permission, authority and power to speak in Jesus’ name. The authority given the early church has not been withdraw by the Holy Spirit. Neither can dispensational teaching destroy the truth of Jesus saying to the present age church “I give unto you the right and authority to be my ambassador to speak the kingdom of God”
A revisit to Eph. 1:18-23
18 I also pray that your mind might see more clearly. Then you will know the hope God has chosen you to receive. You will know that the things God’s people will receive are rich and glorious.
19 And you will know his great power. It can’t be compared with anything else. It is at work for us who believe. It is like the mighty strength
20 God showed when he raised Christ from the dead. He seated him at his right hand in his heavenly kingdom.
21 There Christ sits far above all who rule and have authority. He also sits far above all powers and kings. He is above every title that can be given in this world and in the world to come.
22 God placed all things under Christ’s rule. He appointed him to be ruler over everything for the church.
23 The church is Christ’s body. It is filled by Christ. He fills everything in every way.

There never was a time that God was not. There will never come a time when He shall cease to be
God has neither evolved, grown nor improved. All that he is today He has ever been and will always be.
I am the Lord, I change not (Mal.3:6) is His own unqualified affirmation.
He cannot change for the better for He is already perfect. Being perfect He cannot change for the worst. Improvement or deteration is impossible. I AM THAT I AM.
He is altogether uninfluenced by the flight of time. There is no wrinkle upon His brow of eternity. Therefore, His power can never diminish nor do His glories fade.
